Wildcats fend off pesky Loggers

It was a tight back-and-forth contest between Ocosta and Onalaska until the fourth inning when the Wildcats broke away with three runs and added two more in the sixth to triumph 10-7 on Saturday night.

The Loggers struck first in the bottom of the first inning, then Ocosta grabbed hold of the lead with a five-run outburst behind a two-run double and three walks. Onalaska used a 2-run triple, an RBI walk and an error to tie the game at five.

“We battled today, our defensive play was outstanding,” Onalaska head coach Weylin Womack said. “I honestly thought we got better today, it was head and shoulders better than our last two games.”

Four pitchers were used by the Loggers (0-3) and all struggled with command, giving up 12 walks despite allowing six hits. They loaded the bases in the sixth and got an RBI walk, then the inning ended with their runner being picked off at second base.

Even with the setback, Womack believes this loss will be beneficial down the road.

“We’re riddled with young guys, but they all stepped up to the challenge,” he said. “Overall, we took a big step today.”
