The 1B No. 5 Mossyrock boys basketball team had the defending district champs on the ropes on the road Wednesday night, but No. 10 Willapa Valley roared back with a one-way fourth quarter to win 71-58.
Midway through the third quarter, Mossyrock, which led by seven at halftime, had a nine-point lead. Over the final 12 minutes of gametime, Valley worked its way back into it and then ahead, taking advantage of 15 straight fouls called on Mossyrock.
“That is tough for any team to overcome,” Mossyrock assistant coach Kelly Ross said. “We held our composure but couldn’t come out with the win.”
Willapa Valley ended up outscoring Mossyrock 21-6 in the final eight minutes.
Keegan Kolb scored a team-high 19 points to lead Mossyrock, Matt Cooper had 14, and Zack Munoz added 12.
Mossyrock will get right back to action Thursday, trying to get back into the win column at Firm Foundation.
