Area to Get Huge Wave of Cyclists This Weekend for STP

Thousands of bicyclists will be pedaling through South Thurston and central Lewis counties this weekend as part of the Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic.

Many of the cyclists who choose to complete the STP in two days stay in the Twin Cities or the surrounding communities overnight.

The official midpoint of the ride is Centralia College, which welcomes riders coming through along the Aadland Esplanade in the middle of the campus.

The Centralia-Chehalis Chamber of Commerce assists riders once they get to the Twin Cities — both at the college and at Recreation Park in Chehalis.

Veterans Museum Plans Re-Enactment of Siege of Petersburg

The Siege of Petersburg will be re-enacted as part of the Veterans Memorial Museum’s sesquicentennial remembrance of the Civil War.

The re-enactment will occur Saturday and Sunday at 313 Tune Road, southwest of Chehalis.

This battle began in June 1864, and featured a unique event where the Union forces dug a mine underneath the Confederate trenches to break the siege. The mine was filled with explosives and detonated on July 30. A military debacle ensued when the Union troops ran headlong into the massive crater rather than going around it.

For hours Confederate troops launched a counterattack that resulted in a “turkey shoot” as the Union troops could not climb out of the crater.

The museum is working with engineers to recreate the crater event.

On Saturday, there will be a presentation at the Tune Road site about the Siege of Petersburg 10-11 a.m. The battles will be depicted at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

On Sunday, the schedule is nearly the same, although the second battle will be at 2 p.m.

Living history displays will be held both days at the military and civilian camps.

Helping with the Petersburg event will be the Washington Civil War Association and the Northwest Civil War Council.

Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for seniors (60 and over), students and veterans. Active duty members of the military and children under 6 are free. Food vendors are available.

For more information or to purchase advance tickets, call the museum at (360) 740-8875 or visit www.veteransmuseum.org.

Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and military, $8 for children age 6-12 and children under 5 free. Proceeds will benefit the Grange’s Tenino School District projects.
