Below are the preliminary results for the Nov. 4 election in Thurston County. 

As of 8 p.m. on election night, Thurston County had an estimated voter turnout of 19.27%, with 41,123 ballots cast and 13 ballots returned blank. 

Results will be updated daily on the Thurston County Elections website in the afternoon until all ballots are counted. The election results will be certified on Nov. 25. 

Propositions 

  • City of Olympia Proposition 1: Failing as of election night with 55.97%, or 4,857 votes, opposed and 44.03%, or 3,821 votes, in favor. 

If passed, this citizen initiative would establish labor standards for employers within the City of Olympia. New rules would pertain to work scheduling, shift notification, time between work shifts, minimum wage, safe workplace environment, notice and posting of rights, and prohibiting retaliation. The proposition would also provide resources for administrative rulemaking, fines and enforcement of the new standard. 

  • Yelm Community Schools Proposition 1: For the fourth consecutive time, a Yelm Community Schools levy measure has been rejected by voters within the district. A total of 2,411 people, or 55.12%, voted against the tax while 1,963 YCS residents voted to approve the measure. In Thurston County, a total of 1,644 residents, or 47.11%, voted in favor of passing the YCS levy attempt, while 1,846 total voters, or 52.89%, opposed the measure. In the neighboring Pierce County, a total of 319 voters, or 36.09% of eligible Pierce County voters, attempted to pass the levy, while 565 YCS residents, or 63.91% of eligible Pierce County voters, struck down the tax. 
  • Thurston County Fire Protection District 12 Proposition 1: Passing as of election night with 56.34%, or 462 votes, in favor and 43.66%, or 358 votes, opposed. If passed, this levy lid lift request would allow the district to raise its levy rate to a max of $1.50 per $1,000 of assessed value through 2031. The district’s current rate is $1.21 per $1,000 of assessed value. 
  • Thurston County Fire Protection District 17 Proposition 1: Passing as of election night with 70.43%, or 343 votes, in favor and 29.57%, or 144 votes, opposed. If passed, this levy lid lift request would allow the district to raise its levy rate to a max of $1.50 per $1,000 of assessed value through 2031.

Port of Olympia 

  • Port Commissioner District 2: Incumbent Bob Iyall narrowly led challenger Jerry Toompas with 50.31% of the vote, or 19,294 votes, to Toompas’ 49.23%, or 18,881 votes.
  • Port Commissioner District 3: Krag Unsoeld narrowly led Anthony Hemstad with 50.4% of the vote, or 19,245 votes. Hemstad had 49.11% of the vote, or 18.753 votes. 
  • Port Commissioner District 4: Joel Hansen ran unopposed and received 97.5% of the vote, or 30,635 votes. A total of 784 ballots, 2.5%, went to write-in candidates. 

City of Olympia 

  • City Council Position 4: Incumbent Clark Gilman led challenger Wendy Carlson with 55.07% of the vote, or 4,690 votes, to Carlson’s 44.64%, or 3,802 votes. 
  • City Council Position 5: Kelly Green ran unopposed and received 97.74% of the vote. A total of 157 ballots, 2.26%, went to write-in candidates. 
  • City Council Position 6: Incumbent Robert Vanderpool led challenger Justin Stang with 52.09% of the vote, or 4,391 ballots, to Stang’s 4,010 votes, 47.57%. 
  • City Council Position 7: Paul Berendt led Caleb Gieger with 4,445 votes, 53.32%, to Gieger’s 3,833 votes, 45.98%. 

City of Tumwater 

  • Mayor: Leatta Dahlhoff held a strong lead over Lance Brender with 2,074 votes, 64.33%, to 1,145 votes, 35.51%. Dahlhoff currently serves as the City of Tumwater’s mayor pro-tem. 
  • City Council Position 4: Eileen Swarthout ran unopposed and received 97.48% of the vote. 
  • City Council Position 5: Meghan Sullivan held a strong lead over Rachelle Martin with 2,060 votes, 67.78%, to Martin’s 947 votes, 31.15%. 
  • City Council Position 6: Peter Agabi ran unopposed and received 97.7% of the vote. 

City of Lacey 

  • City Council Position 4: Maren Turner led with 58.22%, or 3,696 votes, to Charles Beck’s 41.27%, or 2,620 votes.
  • City Council Position 5: Andy Ryder ran unopposed and received 97.09% of the vote, or 5,030 ballots. A total of 151 votes, 2.91%, went to write-in candidates. 
  • City Council Position 6: Ryan Siu held a strong lead over Evette Temple with 4,211 votes, 67.16%, to Temple’s 2,025, 32.3%. 
  • City Council Position 7: Incumbent Carolyn Cox held a strong lead over challenger Michael Ron Steadman with 3,978 votes, 63.07%, to Steadman’s 2,296, 36.4%. 

City of Tenino 

  • City Council Position 1: Linda Gotovac ran unopposed and received 91.78% of the vote. 
  • City Council Position 3: Adam Carney ran unopposed and received 97.35% of the vote. 
  • City Council Position 4: Tianne Curtiss ran unopposed and received 97.92% of the vote. 

City of Yelm 

  • Mayor: Incumbent Joe DePinto led challenger JW Foster with 451 votes, 53.63%, to 388 votes, 46.14%. 
  • City Council Position 3: Challenger Griselda Arias held a two-vote lead over incumbent Joshua Crossman, with Arias garnering 394 votes, 49.81%, and Crossman receiving 392 votes, 49.56%, as of election night. 
  • City Council Position 4: Stephanie Kangiser ran unopposed and received 96.81% of the vote. 
  • City Council Position 5: Incumbent Brian Hess led challenger Kayla Russell, with Hess garnering 464 votes, 59.49%, and Russell receiving 309 votes, 39.62%.
  • City Council Position 6: Nicole Sims led David Johnstone by 11 votes, with Sims garnering 393 votes, 50.26%, to Johnstone’s 393 votes, 48.85%. 
  • City Council Position 7: Terry Kaminski ran unopposed and received 95.59% of the vote. 

City of Rainier  

  • Mayor: Bob Shaw ran unopposed and received 97.16% of the vote.
  • City Council Position 1: Amy Baker ran unopposed and received 97.3% of the vote. 
  • City Council Position 3: Tom Arnbrister held a strong lead over Bill Koutrouba with 64.49%, 89 votes, to 31.88%, 44 votes. 
  • City Council Position 5: Dennis McVey ran unopposed and received 97.9% of the vote. 

Town of Bucoda 

  • Mayor: Callie Carpenter ran unopposed and received 94.12% of the vote. 
  • Town Council Position 1: Laura Wilson ran unopposed and received 98.04% of the vote. 

Griffin School District 

  • School Board Director Position 4: Julie Osterberg ran unopposed and received 97.94% of the vote. 
  • School Board Director Position 5: Trish Gregory ran unopposed and received 97.53% of the vote. 

North Thurston Public Schools 

  • School Board Director District 2: Tim Bullus led Jeremy Ryan with 7,465 votes, 59.66%, to Ryan’s 4,960, 39.64%.  
  • School Board Director District 3: Incumbent Sarah Tracy led challenger Loretta Byrnes 57.52%, or 7,327 votes, to 41.88%, or 5,335 votes. 

Olympia School District 

  • School Board Director District 3: Renee Fullerton held a strong lead over Rhyan Smith, with Fullerton garnering 7,833 votes, 66.43%, to Smith’s 3,931, 33.34%. 
  • School Board Director District 5: Gilbert Lamont led Emily Leddige 59.08%, or 6,715 votes, to 40.35%, or 4,586 votes. 

Rainier School District 

  • School Board Director District 4: Edgar Ooms ran unopposed and received 97.02% of the vote. 
  • School Board Director District 5: Rebecca Stillings ran unopposed and received 97.69% of the vote. 

Rochester School District 

  • School Board Director District 1: Francisco J. Villanueva ran unopposed and received 96.65% of the vote. 
  • School Board Director District 5: Heather Harris ran unopposed and received 97.31% of the vote. 

Tumwater School District 

  • School Board Director District 1: Julie Watts led Sarah Overbay with 3,356 votes, 55.32%, to Overbay’s 2,703 votes, 44.55%. 
  • School Board Director Position 3: Incumbent Ty Kuehl led challenger Daniel Mies 56.66%, or 3,424 votes, to 43.16%, 2,608 votes.  
  • School Board Director Position 4: Melissa Determan Beard held a strong lead over  Aimee Staudt with 60.88% of the vote, 3,674 ballots, to Staudt’s 38.91%, 2,348 ballots. 
  • School Board Director Position 5: Rob Warner led Mike McGowan 53.12%, 3,198 ballots, to 46.63%, 2,807 ballots. 

Yelm Community Schools

• School Board Director District 1: Incumbent Frank King held a strong lead over challenger Ray Duncan, with King receiving 2,380 ballots, 60.94%, to Duncan’s 1,525, 39%.

• School Board Director District 4: Ryan Jewell led Debbie Edwards 56.7%, 2,282 ballots, to 43.27%, 1,741 ballots.

West Thurston Regional Fire Authority 

  • Rochester Commissioner Position 2: Incumbent Chris White held a strong lead over Vernon Merryman, with White holding 962 votes, 73.04%, to Merryman’s 347, 26.35%.  
  • Rochester Commissioner Position 3: Robert W. Scott ran unopposed and received 96.09% of the vote. 
  • Littlerock Commissioner Position 1: Thomas Culleton ran unopposed and received 98.35% of the vote. 

South Bay Fire District 8 

  • Commissioner Position 3: Douglas Kilpatrick ran unopposed and received 98.48% of the vote. 
  • Commissioner Position 4: Pamela L. Long ran unopposed and received 98.51% of the vote. 

Thurston County Fire District 12 

  • Commissioner Position 2: Cary Williams ran unopposed and received  96.79% of the vote. 
  • Commissioner Position 5: Eric Klein ran unopposed and received 96.22% of the vote. 

Southeast Thurston Fire Authority 

  • Subregion 1 Commissioner Position 1: Jonathan A. Sprouffske ran unopposed and received 98.31% of the vote. 
  • Subregion 2 Commissioner Position 2: Stewart Kunkel ran unopposed and received 98.25% of the vote. 

Tanglewilde Parks and Recreation District 

  • Commissioner Position 1: Tony Barrett ran unopposed and received 97.73% of the vote. 
  • Commissioner Position 2: Brandyn Lindsey ran unopposed and received 90.91% of the vote. 
  • Commissioner Position 3: Incumbent Steve Pogue held a strong lead over challenger Jerome Cruz, with Pogue garnering 162 votes, 80.6%, to Cruz’s 37, 18.41%. 
  • Commissioner Position 4: Michael J. Murphy ran unopposed and received 97.16% of the vote. 
  • Commissioner Position 5: Alexis Wallace ran unopposed and received 89.80% of the vote. 

Cemetery District 2-Yelm 

  • Commissioner Position 1: Tracie Choate ran unopposed and received 97.05% of the vote. 
  • Commissioner Position 2: Jesse Kellems led with 53.96%, or 1,446 votes. Angela Taylor followed with 26.68%, 715 votes, and Lisa Declercque trailed behind with 18.36%, or 492 votes. 
  • Commissioner Position 3: Kim Harmon ran unopposed and received 96.02% of the vote. 

Other uncontested races 

  • Olympia Municipal Court Judge Position 1: Pamella Nogueira won with 97.99% of the vote.
  • Tenino School Board Director District 5: Chato Salisbury won with 95.37% of the vote. 
  • East Olympia Fire District 6 Commissioner Position 1: Kevin A. Pierce won with 98.09% of the vote. 
  • McLane Black Lake Fire Department Commissioner Position 1: Dale M. Putnam won with 98.12% of the vote. 
  • Griffin Fire Department Commissioner Position 2: Meredith Hutchins won with 97.9% of the vote. 
  • Bald Hills Fire Department Commissioner Position 3: Diana Anaya-McMaster won with 99.22% of the vote. 
  • Cemetery District 2-Grand Mound Commissioner Position 1: Pete Duranceau won with 98.05%.
