The Tenino offense got rolling early and never slowed down on Monday, as the Beavers defeated Toledo 17-7 through a steady rain at Bob Peters Field.
Will Feltus opened the game with a single, and though the ball didn’t leave the infield again for the rest of the inning, the Beavers were able to plate four runs. Carson Hart drew a bases loaded walk to score the first, and three scored on wild pitches in the next two at bats.
The Beavers (2-0) doubled their advantage in the second, as Austin Gonia drilled a bases-clearing triple to deep center field before scoring on an RBI single from Hart.
Hart also started the game on the mound for Tenino, and he allowed just one hit and walked four while striking out three across three scoreless innings.
The Riverhawks (0-1) responded in the bottom of the fourth. Caiden Schultz got Toledo on the board with an RBI single, then Ryker Sorenson cleared the bases with a double to center.
Any hopes for a comeback were quickly erased in the top half of the fifth inning. After the first two Beavers were retired, Hunter Sweet struck out, but reached on a dropped third strike.
An out that would have ended the inning instead turned into the start of a two-out rally, one where the next five batters reached base before a groundout ended the inning. Two runners scored on HBPs, two more came across on another RBI knock from Gonia, and a fifth scored on another wild pitch.
Toledo was again able to chip away in the bottom half of the fifth, thanks to RBI singles from Rohan Feigenbaun and Schultz and a bases-loaded walk from Preston Snider, but another four spot from the Beavers in the sixth was enough to end the game after six.
Gonia finished 2 for 3 at the plate with a triple and five runs batted in, and he scored three times. In addition to getting the win on the bump, Hart went 1 for 2 at the plate and drove in two runs.
Of the 17 runs the Riverhawks allowed, just eight were earned. Sorenson had the most success on the mound for Toledo on Monday, pitching two hitless innings in relief while he drove in three runs at the plate. Schultz went 2 for 4 and drove in two runs.
Both teams are on the road on Wednesday, as Tenino will head to Rochester and Toledo will head south to face Toutle Lake.
