Riverhawks fall in seesaw battle against Chinooks

The Toledo football team dropped a tight, back-and-forth C2B South matchup on Friday, losing 36-29 at Kalama.

Kalama quarterback Aiden Brown did almost all of the heavy lifting for the Chinooks, scoring all five of their touchdowns.

“He’s a stud,” Toledo coach Mike Christensen said. “He’s a really good athlete … We did a good job of being in the right spot, but weren’t physical enough at the point of attack to be able to tackle him.”

The Riverhawks (6-2, 2-1 C2B South) were able to go blow-for-blow with the Chinooks for a majority of the game, as Eli Weeks hit Trevin Gale and Carter Swofford on two long touchdowns and Ethan Carver ran in two others.

The Riverhawks ended up eclipsing 350 total yards, running for 168 while Weeks threw for 187.

Some drives were stalled by mental mistakes, however, ones that kept the Riverhawks from tying the game in the second half.

“Just a couple mental mistakes where guys went the wrong way, and it was bad timing for those,” Christensen said. “You can’t do that deep in your own territory, and you can’t do that against a good football team.”

With the win, Kalama not only clinched the C2B South title, but also set the rest of the standings in place.

Onalaska will get the second spot, Toledo will get the third and Adna will round out the division in fourth place, regardless of the outcome of Kalama and Adna’s matchup next week.

Even if the Pirates pull out the win over Kalama, the Chinooks will have the tiebreaker over the Loggers and the Riverhawks will have it over Adna due to their head-to-head advantages.

As a result, the Chinooks, Loggers and Riverhawks will all head to the district crossover round the week after next, while the Pirates will play a crossover play-in game on Tuesday, Oct. 31 against Wahkiakum, the West division winner.

Toledo will complete its regular season first, however, as the Riverhawks will head to Stevenson to take on the Bulldogs in a non-league game next Friday.
