A Portland man faces criminal charges after he allegedly broke into a house and tried to rape a 15-year-old as she slept in her bedroom, police say.

Hugo Portillo-Corro, 32, is accused of sexual abuse, burglary, attempted unlawful sexual penetration, strangulation and attempted rape, court records show.

The Portland Police Bureau said in a statement that the alleged assault happened around 5:40 a.m. Monday in the 6800 block of Southwest 26th Avenue, and that officers responded after the teenager escaped her attacker and called for help.

Officers found Portillo-Corro at a nearby home and arrested him, and detectives learned that he knew the girl he’s accused of assaulting, police say.

Portillo-Corro has no prior felony convictions in Oregon, court records show.

Police are asking anyone with information about the attack to contact crimetips@police.portlandoregon.gov and reference case number 26-297643.
