Nature Photographers of the Pacific Northwest to Convene in Centralia

Photographers from the Pacific Northwest will get an opportunity to highlight their best nature shots at an event that will bring approximately 200 photographers to Centralia College.

The Nature Photographers of the Pacific Northwest is holding its 31st biannual meeting at the Corbet Theatre in Centralia.

Centralia College Outdoor Club Adviser Roberta Ziegler said she was happy to hold the event locally again.

“They had a lovely time in Centralia and could not wait to come back,” she said.

In January, the Outdoor Club voted to sponsor the event with the help of the Centralia College Art Club and SIGMA.

The event appeals to many, not just photographers, Ziegler said.

“I’m not much of a photographer, but I really wanted to bring them into town. It was so interesting that I ended up staying the whole day,” she said of the last meeting held in Centralia.

The event is unique because it draws in those who love nature, photographers and others who are ready to learn more about the craft. But for Ziegler, the most appealing part is getting people into the Twin Cities area.

“It’s a good event for the community,” she said. “This brings a lot of people into this area that might not otherwise be here.”

Last time the event was held, local businesses offered discounts and a map of the downtown area was given to those attending the meeting. It brought people, and dollars, into the downtown area of Centralia, Ziegler said.

“My assumption is people will return to the community not just for the event, but to come and see the history here,” she said.

Last time the event was held at the college, it brought in approximately 200 people.

Photographers will have the chance to enter two competitions, providing a unique opportunity for their work to be critiqued, said Ziegler.

Up to two images may be submitted for the projected competition, and up to two printed photos can be entered for the print competition. The three categories for the competitions include scenic, wildlife and plant life.

Attendees will also be able to hear guest speaker Roman Kurywczak, a widely published nature photographer with credits in numerous publications. His presentations will focus on photographing wildlife, nighttime landscapes and enhancing macro photography skills.
