It started last winter when girls sports began a shift in securing hardware at Mossyrock High School.
Its basketball program went on a run to the Class 1B state championship game and lost a heartbreaker by two points. Then three months later, the Vikings won two straight elimination games at state softball and placed third.
The momentum didn't stop as a reloaded Vikings basketball squad returned to Spokane. Now, their softball team is trying to get back to Yakima.
Under the same mantra.
One starter from the Mossyrock squad is gone and everyone else is back, leading fifth-year coach Keith Coleman to schedule games against higher levels of competition throughout the regular season.
As is the case most springs, the Columbia Valley league will be dominated by Mossy and Naselle. The Vikings swept their league rivals in the regular season and pulled out a 25-2 thrashing in the district title game.
A new piece for Mossy this season is eighth grader Hadleigh Gerard, who has stepped into the role as the starting shortstop and leadoff hitter in its lineup. Erin Cournyer is back in the circle as the Vikings’s top pitcher.
Mossy is off to a 4-2 start, both losses coming versus 2B programs.
