Loggers get into gear, blow out Wildcats

The Onalaska girls soccer team took the first punch but responded with a haymaker Monday at home, dropping four goals in eight minutes after falling behind en route to a 6-1 win over Ocosta in the first round of the 2B District 4 tournament.

Jaycee Talley started the scoring with a goal off a direct free kick in the 20th minute to tie the game at 1-1. Three minutes later, Kaiyah Sandridge scored what ended up being the game-winner. But the Loggers, who didn’t know that at the time, kept going, with Leighton Underhill scoring in the 27th and Jules Auman picking things back up as soon as Ocosta put the ball back into play with a goal in the 28th.

From there, Onalaska had to wait seven whole minutes before scoring again, when Sandridge took a fee from Yuliana Escalera and deposited it in the net to give the hosts a 5-1 lead less than 20 minutes after they’d fallen behind 1-0.

Sandridge scored once more, late in the second half, to cap her hat trick.

Kate Zandell led a standout defensive effort for the Loggers with 17 interceptions, and between the sticks, Hailee Brown made one save on two shots directed her way.

Onalaska will move on to face Napavine on Thursday at Kalama, with a spot in the district championship game and a State berth on the line.
