Loggers can’t keep up early, fall to Ducks

The Onalaska boys basketball team’s slide continued on Saturday, as the Loggers fell to Toutle Lake 68-38 for their fourth straight loss.

The Ducks set the tone physically early, which allowed them to capitalize on several turnovers en route to a 19-6 lead after one quarter of play.

“They got into us physically and turned us over,” Onalaska coach Brent Wood said. “We had a hard time executing much offensively because we couldn’t match their physicality.”

The Loggers (3-9, 1-6 C2BL) adjusted in the second, scoring 12, but they still trailed by 15 at the break. That deficit only grew larger in the third, when the Ducks pushed it to over 30.

“We told our kids at the end of the game that Toutle lake is a playoff team,” Wood said. “And that’s what playoff toughness looks like.”

Wood said the Loggers’ focus was on slowing down Zach Swanson, but “too many mental mistakes” allowed the game to get away from them. Swanson finished with 19 points.

Blaze Underhill led the Loggers with 18 points, including three 3-pointers.

Onalaska will hit the road on Wednesday and take on Rainier.
