Letter to the editor: Debate the solutions, not our commitment to making America great

Posted

A response to letter writer Mike Kimbrel’s piece on Democrats not wanting to make America great: To begin, the question, “Why do Democrats resist making America great?” seems to be intentionally mischaracterizing the way Democrats feel about our country.

Do you really believe that Democrats do not want America to be great?

Or, does it make more sense that Democrats simply feel that President Trump’s policies and the larger Republican Party will not help to make America great?

The mistake is in assuming that Republicans want to make America great and that Democrats do not. Myself and every Democrat I know wants America to be great.

Democrats and Republicans largely see the same problems, they simply disagree with the solutions.

For example, both Republicans and Democrats want wages to increase and the middle class to grow. The Republican solution is to lower taxes on corporations, businesses, etc. They believe that if companies spend less on taxes, then they will pass the money on to the workers.

Companies will be able to raise wages or hire more workers.

Democrats believe that lowering taxes on corporations will simply lead to more money being pocketed by the CEOs and other wealthy elites. They believe that the savings will not be passed on to the worker. Their solution is to strengthen unions so that workers can negotiate better pay, benefits, etc.

They also believe that increasing regulations and the minimum wage will benefit workers in case the corporations are prioritizing profits for their shareholders, instead of their employees.

So, again, I want to make America great. Democrats and Republicans want to make America great.

Stop intentionally dividing our nation. Debate the solutions, not our commitment to making America great.
