Letter to the editor: Candidate should provide clarity to extremist claim

Posted

During the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission (WSCJTC) investigation of Morton’s disgraced former Police Chief Roger Morningstar in 2023, officer Cole Cournyer, who became chief after Morningstar’s tenure, was interviewed by WSCJTC.

In that interview transcript, WSCJTC specifically asked Mr. Cournyer, “Do you have any knowledge of Roger being involved or associated to any extremist groups like the Three Percenters?”

Mr. Cournyer responded by telling the investigator that Mike Hadaller was the person to contact regarding the 3% rally in Morton that was being discussed. WSCJTC never followed up on Cournyer’s tip.

It is important to note that I myself did not call or designate this group as extremist; I am simply quoting the question as it was posed by the state investigator at the time.

Given Mr. Hadaller is now running for our county commission, I hope this issue can be clarified for voters. If there are local connections to this group, which a state investigator referred to as extremist, or if Mr. Hadaller is the point of contact for such a group as Mr. Cournyer implied to the investigator, this is something people deserve to know for an informed vote this election.

I’d welcome either Mr. Cournyer or Mr. Hadaller to clarify this previous statement made to the WSCJTC investigator.
