In loving memory of Douglas Scherer

Posted

Douglas Vern “Bud” Scherer passed away at his home in Renton, Washington, on Monday, July 10, 2023. He was born and raised in Chehalis, the son of Alfred Theodore Scherer and Ione Dorothy (Scott) Scherer. He had an older brother named Robert and a younger sister named Shirley.

Bud graduated from Chehalis High School in 1945 and worked for a time as a cattle buyer for his dad’s meat packing plant. He married Sharlene Joy Hurn, from Centralia, in 1949 and shortly afterward moved to Seattle to begin his career with the Boeing Company. Bud and Sharlene had three children: Cathy, Douglas and Linda.

In the early ’60s, Bud transferred to Cocoa Beach, Florida, to work on the Minute Man Missile program, then transferred back to Washington to work at the Renton Boeing plant, and moved into the home he would live in the rest of his life — the next 60 years. Bud enjoyed gardening, camping, motor homing, politics (a staunch Republican) and going to garage sales.

A memorial service was held at Mountain View Cemetery on Friday, July 21. Services were provided by Newell-Hoerling’s Mortuary in Centralia.

Bud is survived by his son, Douglas Scherer, daughter-in-law, Carol Scherer, and his granddaughter Dawn Scherer.
