Centralia will light up the night sky in a whole new way on Saturday, Sept. 13.
In celebration of the city’s 150th birthday and Centralia College’s 100th anniversary, the City of Centralia Parks Department and the Centralia College Foundation are teaming up to present a Centralia-themed drone light show.
The display will feature 150 illuminated drones performing a 12-minute, music-synchronized show over Bob Peters Field at Centralia College. The program will include approximately 25 custom animated images celebrating Centralia’s history, icons and community spirit, plus a few special appearances, including George Washington and his dog Rockwood.
The day’s festivities will begin with Centralia College’s Centennial Picnic, held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Little Commencement Field by the clock tower. Guests can enjoy an old-fashioned family picnic complete with games, crafts, historical displays, cotton candy, popcorn, coffee drinks and food carts.
Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs, leave them in place after the picnic and return in the evening for the best seats in the house for the drone show.
The drone light show will begin promptly at 8:30 p.m. and will be visible from up to half a mile away, though the best viewing area will be on Little Commencement Field.
“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to see our city’s history come alive in the night sky,” Amy Buckler, Centralia parks director, said in a news release, “and we’re thrilled to partner with Centralia College to make it happen.”
