Cardinals race past Loggers for second straight day

The Winlock baseball team pulled away early and never looked back on Thursday, defeating Onalaska 13-3 in five innings.

The Cardinals put up seven in the first, taking advantage of a two-out error to hang a crooked number. Had the out been recorded, it would have just been 1-0 heading into the bottom of the first.

Winlock (2-0, 2-0 C2BL) added on in the second with five more runs, and they made it 13-0 in the third.

“I thought we played with a lot of energy tonight,” Winlock coach Mike Housden said. “I liked the energy and effort the kids gave tonight.”

The Loggers (0-2, 0-2 C2BL) were able to plate three runs in the bottom of the third, but they couldn’t trim the lead to single digits and the game was called after five.

“We just take an inning or two to settle in, and we got to get past that,” Onalaska coach Weylin Womack said. “We just gotta keep working at it and keep getting better … We’ll get there.”

It’s Winlock's second win over Onalaska in as many days, as the Cardinals topped the Loggers 12-2 on Wednesday.

Carter Svenson and Jaxyn Pelagio led the Cardinals with two hits and two RBI each at the plate, while James Cusson struck out seven in three innings of work on the hill.

Enrique Sanchez pitched two shutout innings for Onalaska, allowing two hits and striking out two in that stretch.

Winlock will host Adna in a doubleheader on Monday, while Onalaska will host Ocosta on Saturday.
