The Winlock girls basketball team found its first league win of the season in its middle school gymnasium Tuesday, as the Cardinals grit out a 33-15 win over Onalaska in a battle of winless-in-league sides.
The game had to be moved across Winlock’s campus due to clock issues at the main gym, and both sides took a bit to get going. The Cardinals ended up being the side to hit its stride the closest, finishing strong with 20 second-half points after leading just 13-8 at halftime.
But while Winlock’s offense scuffled, the defense made sure Onalaska had an even worse time with the ball. Natalie Cardenas, Adriana Garcia, and Angela Gil Munoz teamed up to make sure that Ony playmaker Brooklyn Sandrdge never got an easy look from anywhere near the perimeter, holding her to just four points. That was still the team high for the Loggers, who shot an ice-cold 4 for 61 from the field and 5 for 20 from the free-throw line.
Winlock took less than half as many shots as its guests but saw them go in at a much better clip, including three clutch 3-pointers from Garcia, who finished with a game-high 13 points. Kindyl Kelly added nine points, six steals, and four rebounds, Cardenas had six points and 10 rebounds, and Gil posted five points, six steals, and four rebounds.
“It wasn't our best game of the season, but it was a great team effort,” Winlock coach Dracy McCoy said. “I am proud of the way we competed tonight.”
Onalaska will get back to action Thursday at home against Toledo, while Winlock will get a week off before heading to Kalama next Tuesday.
