The Tumwater boy’s tennis team won its fourth straight match on Wednesday, defeating W.F. West 4-2.
The Thunderbirds dominated in the three doubles matches, taking all three and dropping just seven games along the way.
Max Bunn and Luke Houk swept W.F. West’s Christian Patana and Gabe Preist 6-0, 6-0, Cody Lambert and Kaleb Peterson bested Braden Newman and Jonah Ames 6-3, 6-0, and Lawson Lougheed and Billy Clemmens topped Tyler Smith and Sawyer Cothern 6-0, 6-4.
W.F. West’s Justin Chung and Javyn Han won the first two singles games for the Tigers, also dropping seven sets along the way, leaving it up to the third singles match.
Things started well for W.F. West’s Will Cummings, who won the first set 6-0 against Tumwater’s Matt Merchant.
But once Merchant took a game in the second set and sealed the Tumwater team victory, he got rolling, eventually taking both the second set 7-5 and the tiebreaker 10-7 to win the match.
Going into the match, W.F. West coach Jack State knew that based on the strength of the T-birds’ doubles teams, the Bearcats would likely have to take all three singles matches to have a chance of winning.
“We talked about that before with the kids,” State said. “And it was a very good match.”
The Thunderbirds are back in action tomorrow against Centralia, while the Bearcats return to the court on Friday, when they’ll host Black Hills.
