ANACORTES — Every one of Adna’s first 17 wins this season has featured at least two goals.
On Saturday, though, one was all the Pirates needed to pick up number 18.
Brynn Arrington finished off a corner kick from Payton Aselton in the fourth minute, and Adna held on to beat Friday Harbor, 1-0, in the quarterfinals of the State 2B girls soccer playoffs.
Adna (18-1) faces Kalama at 4 p.m. on Friday at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner in the state semifinals.
The Pirates came into the game fired up, according to coach Juli Aselton, after the team was told to cut its roster to 22 players before the game — forcing some players that made the trip to watch the game from the stands.
“(It was) tough when there was no time to prepare players or parents or come up with a strategy,” Aselton said. “Needless to say the rest of our team was fired up over that and they wanted to win for those players that have played and supported us all season.”
Goalkeeper Makaela Meister made six saves in the win, and the Wolverines never really threatened until the end of the game, with Meister and the Pirate defense coming up big to keep the ball out of the net.
Adna had opportunities to score an additional goal with a penalty kick from Cierra Swenson just missing and a shot from Payton Aselton being tipped over the crossbar by Friday Harbor goalkeeper Darcy Ayers.
Adna beat Kalama twice in the regular season, 2-0 and 3-0, but the Chinooks beat Adna 2-0 last Saturday in the District 4 championship game.
