A fire destroyed a vacant house in the 100 block of Rogers Road in Chehalis Saturday evening, with crews staying at the scene past midnight to keep the blaze contained to a single building.

DJ Hammer, public information officer with Lewis County Fire District 6 in rural Chehalis, said the cause of the fire is under investigation and that crews were uncertain where in the house the fire started.

Crews were dispatched at 6:50 p.m. Saturday, after a passerby called in the fire, and were met with a two-story house ablaze. The building was so heavily involved, said Hammer, that crews were mostly concerned with keeping the fire contained to a single building, and off a nearby shop and trees. The building had partially collapsed by the time they arrived.

A downed line required attention from the Lewis County Public Utilities District, which prevented crews from extinguishing the fire until it was dealt with. During that time, they worked to keep it from spreading, said Hammer.

Firefighters successfully kept the fire contained, and there were no injuries reported. Hammer said the property owner contacted first responders at the scene and confirmed there were no people inside.

The building was a total loss, and was completely destroyed by the fire.

Responders from District 6 were aided by crews from the Chehalis Fire Department, and Lewis County Fire Districts 5, 13 and 15. They stayed on-scene until about 12:30 a.m., Hammer said.
