Man Injured in Accidental Gun Discharge in Chehalis Could Face Charges

A 79-year-old man is facing misdemeanor charges after reportedly accidentally shooting himself in the foot with a gun that was in his pocket while at a pet supply store in Chehalis.

At 12:42 p.m. on Monday, officers from the Chehalis Police Department responded to a report of an accidental discharge of a gun in the 1400 block of Northwest Louisiana Avenue in Chehalis.

Witnesses reported a 79-year-old man, whose name has not been released, was at the Petsense checkout counter when he put his hand in his pocket. Witnesses said they heard a loud bang, and the victim said he shot himself, according to the police department.

The man and his wife drove to Providence Centralia Hospital before police arrived. Officers made contact with the man at the hospital, where he was treated and released for a non-life-threatening gunshot injury to the foot.

The man has not yet been charged with a crime. The incident has been referred to the Chehalis Municipal Court Prosecutor for a review of possible charges.
