A man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound Thursday afternoon on Coal Creek Road after deputies responded to a report of an armed, suicidal man in a residence, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.

At 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, deputies were dispatched to the 800 block of Coal Creek Road. Dispatchers advised they were talking to a man who reported another man was in a residence with a handgun and was threatening suicide.

A number of deputies responded, and two pulled into the residence’s driveway, where they found a man with a gun, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies began talking with the suspect and asked him to put down the gun. The man put down the gun and began walking toward deputies before running back to the gun and fatally shooting himself, according to the sheriff’s office.

The incident is under investigation.
