Authorities say an Olympia man punched a Lewis County Corrections Deputy in the face on Sunday and threatened to “come back to the jail and do a drive-by shooting.”

Ryan K. Riedesel, 39, was charged with third-degree assault and second-degree malicious mischief. He’s being held in the Lewis County Jail without bail pending a competency evaluation.

According to a probable cause affidavit, on Sunday, a corrections deputy entered Riedesel’s cell in the jail for a standard inspection. Riedesel allegedly punched the deputy in the face, knocking him backward onto the ground.

Lewis County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Dusty Breen wrote in an email that the deputy suffered lacerations to his face.

“Riedesel admitted he punched the deputy because he was mad at the living conditions in the jail. Riedesel also threatened to come back to the jail and do a drive by shooting,” read court documents.

He was charged with third-degree assault for the incident.

Riedesel had been in the jail since an incident on Friday at Providence Centralia Hospital. Police say Riedesel shattered an emergency room safety window to escape the room.

“Witnesses stated that Riedesel was extremely agitated, yelling, and exposing himself to the personnel,” read court documents.

The cost of damages was estimated to be over $1,000, and Riedesel was subsequently charged with second-degree malicious mischief.

He was set to appear for a preliminary hearing in Lewis County Superior Court Monday, but prosecutors stated he was in no condition to appear in court. Deputy Prosecutor Sylvia Irimescu proposed that he be subject to a competency hearing to determine whether he is fit to be tried in either matter.

Judge James Lawler agreed, and said that Riedesel would be held without bail in the meantime. A review hearing to check on his status was set for Sept. 5.
