A 35-year-old man accused of the third-degree rape of a 17-year-old girl had his bail set at $25,000 in Lewis County Superior Court on Monday

According to court documents, Stephen Max Douglas Jr. engaged in sexual intercourse with the girl after she expressed either by her words or actions that she did not consent.

On March 24, detectives with the Chehalis Police Department were advised of a sexual assault victim at Providence Centralia Hospital. According to court documents, her dad said the girl did not come home from school on time and called the school to inquire about her whereabouts. The school called her in as a runaway but she returned home around 2 p.m. and told her father she had been raped by a man she met at the bus stop.

The girl told a detective that she was at a bus stop located between Walmart and the Town Center when she began talking to Douglas, who she had met previously, according to court documents. The girl got on the bus with Douglas and after stopping at a marijuana store, the duo went up a small hill later identified to be near North National Avenue and the Centralia-Chehalis Chamber of Commerce.

Douglas allegedly placed his coat on the ground and told the girl to perform oral sex on him, according to court documents. Then afterward, Douglas told the girl to lay on his coat, removed her pants and underwear and allegedly had sex with her. The girl said she tried closing her legs during the incident but was told to put her legs around Douglas, so she did. The girl told deputies that she may have said no but did not remember.

Afterward, Douglas went to Walmart to buy the girl new pants and socks since they had become muddy. He was pictured on the store’s surveillance, and later the girl selected Douglas’ photo out of a montage. According to court documents, the girl was distraught and said she trusted Douglas.

Detectives with the Chehalis Police Department went to an address on Greenwood Lane, where they contacted Douglas.

Douglas told the detectives he had worked Thursday night and in the morning went to Walmart to cash his check, according to court documents. He also said he bought small bottles of vodka and drank them at the bus stop, then walked to the marijuana store, bought some product, and then got on a bus and went home to Centralia.

Douglas’ next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday.
