Work on Rimrock Tunnel will cause long delays on U.S. Highway 12 over White Pass

Posted

Drivers on U.S. Highway 12 east of White Pass should expect long delays at the Rimrock Tunnel for the next few weeks.

Starting Saturday, March 30, U.S. 12 will be closed for two hours at a time, seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

The delays will continue until an emergency rock scaling project is complete, estimated to be in mid-April.

A recent inspection of the Rimrock Tunnel revealed loose rock, prompting an emergency project for rock scaling. Frost wedging near the tunnel happens every spring when water seeps into the cracks of the slopes. It freezes and thaws, causing the rocks to break.
