A Tacoma woman has been convicted for raising a knife against a Lewis County Sheriff’s Office deputy in April.

Judge J. Andrew Toynbee found the defendant, Tara C. Shane, guilty of second-degree assault and obstructing a police officer during a bench trial on July 12.

She was sentenced July 16 and will serve a total of 20 months in jail on both charges, followed by 18 months in community custody.

Toynbee additionally ordered that Shane undergo a mental health evaluation and follow all recommended treatment.

The charges against Shane stemmed from an April 29 incident with a Lewis County Sheriff’s Office deputy on U.S. Highway 12.

Deputy Sam Schouten had been dispatched regarding a disabled vehicle and arrived to find Shane apparently burning electronics on a propane stove, and approached. Shane reportedly became agitated during their conversation and “returned to her vehicle and obtained a large jagged knife, grasped it with a fist, turned toward Deputy Schouten and began raising it approximately waist-high when Deputy Schouten had to lunge at Shane to disarm and arrest her,” according to court documents.

Neither Shane or Schouten reported injuries from the incident.

Shane was initially booked into the Lewis County jail on April 29 and has remained in custody since.
