A Salem woman has died of the H1N1 influenza virus at Salem Hospital, according to the Statesman Journal.

Fifty-three-year-old Suzie Mahaffey was first diagnosed with bronchitis when she went into an urgent care clinic Dec. 29.

By last week she was having difficulty breathing and was admitted into the intensive care unit. She died Tuesday.

Providence Health & Services also announced Wednesday that it will be restricting visitors to hospitals starting Thursday.

In a letter, Providence's chief medical officer said the restrictions come after a surge of flu cases and that they're aimed at keeping staff, patients, families and visitors safe.

The state's latest statistics on the flu show it's widespread, with 81 hospitalizations.
