Wolves hold on to beat Warriors

The Black Hills girls basketball team started strong and did enough to earn the win Wednesday at Rochester, 51-42.

The Wolves (8-2, 2-1 2A EvCo) held the Warriors (7-3, 2-2 2A EvCo) to just six points in the first quarter, helping push out a 25-18 lead at halftime.

But while Rochester never let things get out of hand, the Warriors couldn’t do much in the second half more than just stay within striking distance.

“Unfortunately we didn’t play as disciplined as I know we can and tried to force too many things tonight, which allowed Black Hills to create a gap we just couldn’t close despite our best efforts,” Rochester coach Keeli Rivas said.

Kiley McMahon scored 17 points for the Wolves to lead all scorers, with Tyler Venable right behind her on 16. Claire Johnson brought down 15 rebounds, while Natalie Buchannon had five steals.

Mandy Andree-Cordell posted 13 points to lead the Warriors, and Grace Hoover joined her in double figures with 10.

Black Hills will get a crucial rivalry matchup with Tumwater on Friday, while Rochester will be off until next Tuesday, when it goes to Shelton.
