For the second straight weekend meet, Bearcats senior thrower Carson Smith eclipsed 50 feet in the shot put. This time, he was on top of the podium with a toss of 51 feet, 8 inches at Saturday’s Tiger Invite in Battle Ground.

Smith, who set a new PR and broke a school record at last week’s Bear Relays, hit his mark on the first throw of the day. He also set a new PR in the javelin by three feet. W.F. West finished 10th in the team race with 31.5 points.

Mason Ruiz, a Winlock transfer and in his first year doing pole vault, cleared the bar at 11-06 for a new career best to take third. In the hurdles, Maddox Sampson was the runner-up in the 110s and Hayden Niemi took fifth in the 300s. Ruiz, Niemi, Sampson and Solomon Dennis took eighth in the 1,600-meter relay while Walker Sampson placed sixth in the open 200.

On the girls side, Joy Cushman was W.F. West’s highest finisher, taking third place in the 800-meter run in 2:22.17. She also anchored its eighth place 1,600 relay and senior KD Obtinario placed eighth in the shot put.
