W.F. West’s Boggess Finishes as District Runner-Up

Battling all the way through the league tournament and the district title game without dropping a set, W.F. West’s top boys tennis singles player, Aaron Boggess, couldn’t keep his streak going in a district title defeat to Columbia River’s Lucas Walburn, 6-4, 6-4.

Boggess’ run to the title game earned him a ticket to the state tournament in the spring, and included a 6-3, 6-0 win over Mark Morris’ Marco St. Martin-Shook and a 6-2, 6-0 win over Fort Vancouver’s Andrew Walczyk in the semifinals.

Elsewhere in singles play, Tumwater’s Drew Johnson, Centralia’s Jacoby Corwin, and Black Hills’ Josh Do were all defeated in the first round and headed to the consolation bracket looking to make a run and earn a state bid.

Johnson defeated Corwin in the first round of the consolation bracket in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, before falling to Walczyk 6-3, 6-1, in the next round.

Do advanced on the other side of the consolation bracket to defeat St. Martin-Shook 6-3, 6-2, and then Tucker Kneipp of Woodland 6-0, 6-2 to make it the consolation final. Do lost that match, 6-2, 6-4 to Walczyk.

On the doubles side, another W.F. West pair made a run to qualify for state and finish third in the tournament. Bearcats top pair Javyn Han and Bryce Kuykendall lost to eventual district champion Cavin Holden and Aiden McCoy of R.A. Long in the semifinals, before battling back to defeat Evergreen League champion Jayden Lovingfoss and Wyatt Wagner in the consolation final, 7-5, 6-3.

W.F. West second pair Sam Mittge and Christian Patana also made the tournament, but were ousted in two matches, both in straight sets, falling to Holden and McCoy of RAL and Harris and Little of Columbia River.
