W.F. West ‘weathers the storm,’ holds off Battle Ground

At halftime against Battle Ground, W.F. West had a 21-point lead and seemed poised to run away with a dominant victory.

Twenty-four game minutes later, after 17 unanswered points from the Tigers, the Bearcats were more than happy to leave Battle Ground with a 28-24 win.

“It was just kinda one of those halves,” W.F. West coach Dan Hill said. “We had to weather the strom, literally … We stuck it out, guys battled and regrouped, stayed together, and got a W.”

A torrential downpour is about the only thing that’s been able to slow down the W.F. West offense over the last month, but the Bearcats still finished with impressive numbers on that side of the ball.

Wyatt Hoffman scored four total touchdowns, two of which went to Connor Coleman, and tallied more than 200 total yards. Coleman hauled in 10 catches on the night for 140 yards and his pair of touchdowns, and Coleman also came down with the game-sealing interception late in the fourth quarter.

“Defensively, they stuck with the system, stuck together, and made the plays at the end to get us the win,” Hill said. “I’m proud of them for handling the adversity.”

Miles Martin added 60 yards on the ground, and Graysen Serl also hauled in a receiving touchdown.

The Bearcats (5-1, 1-0 2A EvCo) will enter Swamp Cup Week on a five-game winning streak, and next Friday, Oct. 17, they’ll go for their 17th straight win over Centralia at Bearcat Stadium.

“Swamp Cup is always a fun week,” Hill said. “There’s great energy in the building and school, and the kids are always excited. We’re looking forward to it.”
