The W.F. West bowling team made the trip to Battle Ground on Monday, and the Bearcats came away with a 1,732-1,608 victory over Prairie to start the season 1-0.
It’s a younger Bearcat team than the one that went unbeaten last year and finished fourth at state, as a junior, three sophomores, and a freshman were getting their first taste of varsity action.
Junior Julianna Gonzalez was the top bowler in the match, averaging 170 on the day with a high score of 181.
According to coach Rich Bunker, the lanes at Tiger Lanes were very slick, and they also featured string pins, a newer concept.
If he said that if he had a choice, he “would never bowl on them again.”
“They were very difficult to knock over,” Bunker said. “But hey, a win is a win.”
Bunker added that moving forward, the Bearcats will have some flexibility in their lineup, as they also have a senior and four sophomores who could step in.
Next up for W.F. West is a trip to Hazel Dell Lanes, where the Bearcats will take on Columbia River on Monday.
