The W.F. West girls soccer team picked up a win over the weekend, topping Evergreen (Vancouver) 3-0 at Bearcat Stadium on Saturday.
Taylor Tobin opened the scoring in the 18th minute off an assist from Mirabel Burger, and the 1-0 scoreline held until the break.
At halftime, W.F. West coach Kevin Schultz challenged his team to come out with more energy in the second half.
“Saturday games can be difficult,” Schultz said. “We were kind of lethargic in the first half, and we talked about having a better response.”
It took just 24 seconds for the Bearcats to answer that call, as Burger capped a brilliant buildup off the kickoff with a goal off a Tobin assist to make it 2-0.
Nine minutes later, W.F. West keeper Charlee Nelson punted the ball downfield, and Burger again found the back of the net for a three-goal lead.
“It was good to see them respond to the challenge at half and raise their standard and level of play,” Schultz said.
Burger finished with her brace and assist, contributing on all three W.F. West goals.
“She’s so good on the ball,” Schultz said. “She does a really good job of being deceptive and getting around defenders. She’s a really clever player, and then on goal she’s a very good finisher.”
In addition to her assist, Nelson finished with four saves in net. Through four games, including three last week, the Bearcats have yet to concede a goal.
“Charlee had a really good week, and she had a really good game (Saturday),” Schultz said.
W.F. West (4-0) will look to extend its winning streak on Tuesday at Yelm.
