Whether running cross country, creating films, playing music or working toward his next Boy Scouts achievement, Connor Clary is always looking for his next challenge.
The 15-year-old from Centralia, a ninth grader at W.F. West High School in Chehalis, recently took on a new adventure by serving as a legislative page in the Washington state House of Representatives, according to a news release from state Rep. Peter Abbarno, R-Centralia.
Abbarno is the House Republican Caucus chair.
Clary spent a week at the Capitol, getting a behind-the-scenes look at how laws are made and gaining hands-on experience in state government.
“Connor’s enthusiasm and well-rounded skill set made him a fantastic addition to the House Page Program,” Abbarno stated in the release. “His leadership in Boy Scouts, discipline as a runner and creativity in music and filmmaking all reflect the qualities of an engaged, thoughtful young leader.”
As a page, Clary played an essential role in the daily operations of the House, delivering messages between legislative offices, assisting lawmakers on the House floor and attending page school to learn more about Washington’s government.
“The House Page Program is an incredible way for students to get involved in civic life and experience government in action,” Abbarno said. “Connor’s dedication to learning and his drive to challenge himself, whether through athletics, leadership or public service, will serve him well in any path he chooses.”
The legislative session offers weekly opportunities for students ages 14 to 16 to serve as pages. Participants receive a daily stipend of $65 and can earn up to 20 hours of community service. For more information on the House Page Program, visit leg.wa.gov and click on the Learn and Participate tab.
