W.F. West secures shutout over Class 3A foe

Playing an opponent once classification higher proved to not affect W.F. West as it cruised to a 4-0 shutout over Kelso on Wednesday night on the road. The victory sets up an Evergreen Conference showdown between the Bearcats and Aberdeen on Friday in Chehalis.

All four of the goals were scored rather quickly between each other, two in each half.

W.F. West (2-1) was awarded a penalty kick after a foul and Adrian Jaimes blasted the shot into the back of the net in the 21st minute for a 1-0 lead. Jaimes was on the passing end of a goal scored by Israel Lopez Cruz four minutes later to double the margin.

After playing lockdown defense and controlling possession for the majority of the night, the Bearcats added some insurance.

Rafael Mendez scored in the 76th minute and Jaimes connected his second goal of the match two minutes later. The Bearcats had 14 shots on target compared to three from the Hilanders. Cayden Page and Josh Madrigal shared goalkeeping duties in the win.

“It was our best 80 minutes so far this (season),” W.F. West head coach Allen Anderson said. “The backline is really starting to gel. Proud of their effort despite tired legs from back-to-back games.”
