W.F. West gets second straight win in Kelso

The W.F. West softball team earned its second win in as many days in Kelso on Monday, taking down the Hilanders 5-2.

“I feel pretty good about that,” W.F. West coach Kevin Zylstra said.

The Bearcats took the lead early on an Avalon Myers two-run home run in the first.

“It was very loud,” Zylstra said of the blast. “We’re facing a team that went to state and their pitcher was very effective. It was timely and we took advantage of it when we had base runners on.”

Taylor Tobin brought home another pair with an RBI knock to make it 4-0 in the top of the second.

Kelso responded with two in the bottom of the second, but both pitchers settled in from there. The only other run of the game came in the top of the fight, when Charlie Clinton scored on an error.

Tobin put together another great performance on the mound, as she allowed just two hits and two earned runs while walking four and striking out 12 in a complete game effort.

“That’s exactly the step I want to see from her,” Zylstra said, while adding that two of the four walks came when they intentionally pitched around the batter.

Through four tough non-league games, the Bearcats now sit at 3-1.

“I’m thrilled to be 3-1 right now,” Zylstra said. “When I wrote down my prediction, 3-1 was not what I had written down. I’m very happy with how we're playing right now. The stiff competition can make us better when we get into league.”

The Bearcats will get another tough road test on Friday, when they head to Lacey to face North Thurston.
