Weekend track roundup: Onalaska’s Thayer sets another PR in shot put

It’s been a spring of personal best for Loggers junior Ethan Thayer and it continued at Saturday’s Beaver Dam Jam invite in Woodland, winning the shot put with a toss of 61 feet, 3 inches.

It’s the second time in three weeks Thayer has seen his best throw go over 60 feet. He also won the discus in 177-06, making it four straight weekends he has swept the two events. Luke Barrick, the Idaho State commit, got back to his winning ways with a clearance of 16 feet to claim the pole vault.

The best area team was the W.F. West boys with XXX points, second behind fellow EvCo foe Aberdeen. Maddox Sampson ran 15.73 to win the 110 hurdles and Peyton Santiago won the javelin for the second straight weekend, throwing 164-09.

Walker Sampson was the runner-up in the open 100 and 200 plus ran legs on the Bearcats’ top-five 400 and 1,600-meter relays. Connor Clary was the runner-up in the 3,200 with a PR of 10:58.86 while Carson Smith set two career-bests in the shot put (54-00.50) and discus (147-09) for third and fourth, respectively.

Rochester’s Le’Shawn Hines registered three top-six finishes in the three jumping events while Adna saw Steven O’Dell win the 800 as well as its 800 relay. Four other events for the Pirates ended with top-five placements.

On the girls side, W.F. West’s Lauren Kelley competed in her first weekend meet of the season and won the long jump, open 400 and was a part of its runner-up 1,600 relay. Joy Cushman claimed the 800 while Amanda Linwood was top-five in the shot put and discus, as was Mallory Gaskill in the 200.

Onalaska’s Emalie Jacoby won the discus in 109-08 and placed top-five in the long jump and javelin. Both of the Loggers relays took sixth place while Capri McGraw placed top-10 in three events.

For Rochester, Brooklyn Alfonso (javelin), Kenna Pratt (long jump) and Vera Hawes (1,600) recorded top-six performances. Adna’s Kamryn Freeman was third in the shot put and fourth in the discus, plus Carmen Chapman was third in the high jump. Its 400 and 800 relays took third and Ava Humphrey was fifth in the 800.

Tumwater boys place top-10 in loaded invite

Behind a new PR in the 100-meter dash from star Blake Kirkpatrick, the T-Birds hung with some of Washington State’s best and tied for seventh in the boys team race with 25 points at Saturday’s gearUP Eason Invite.

Kirkpatrick was the fastest out of the 100 prelims with a 10.64, which was his PR until he blazed down the straightaway in the finals and clocked a 10.57 to finish second. The senior also anchored Tumwater’s 1,600-meter relay to a runner-up finish.



Other standouts for the T-Birds were Logan Budd placing third in the open 400 in a career-best time of 50.69 while also being a member of their fifth place 400 relay. In the javelin, freshman Cody Hayes unleashed a toss of 159-07 for a PR and fifth place finish.

On the girls side, Tumwater had a handful of top-five placements, paced by junior Alexandra Broome’s first time under 60-second open 400 time, taking second in 59.32. Paige Henderson took third in the discus, as did Wendy Ferrel in the pole vault.

Cassidy Hedin was sixth in the 300 hurdles and as a member of Tumwater’s 1,600 relay that also grabbed sixth. Abigail Krause (shot put) also nabbed sixth place.

Parvin brings in three wins to lead MWP to top-three finish out east

Behind junior standout Mathew Parvin’s three victories and seven additional top-eight placements, the Timberwolves accumulated 68 points to place third in the boys team race at Friday’s Naches Valley Invite.

Two other MWP athletes nabbed field event wins. Mark Henderson cleared 11-feet even for a new PR in the pole vault while Samuel Zapalac won the javelin with a heave of 140-09. Parvin triumphed in the 100, long jump and anchored their 400 relay to a winning time of 45.66 seconds.

Aiden Kampa took fifth in the 3,200 and Owen Louks was third in the high jump. MWP’s 1,600-meter relay also was third.

Mossyrock finished sixth in the team race and its highest finishers were Tristen Tosul (javelin) and Aylan Bigbee (high jump) both in fourth.

On the girls side, MWP had the lone individual winners between the two schools in Miah Morgan, claiming the open 200 in 28.07 seconds for a new PR plus Samantha Lougee (105-flat) in the javelin. 

Karah Fairhart nabbed second place in the discus, javelin and shot put plus Echo Taylor (800) and both 400 and 800-meter relays placed top-five. The Timberwolves were fourth in the team race with 72 points.

Mossyrock’s two relays were victorious with Leah Contreras, Jalyn Kolb and Bailey Gross running in both of them. Contreras was also second in the open 100 and Audrey Ollikainen placed top-six in the shot put and discus.
