Weekend earthquakes reported off the Oregon coast

Posted

A 4.5 magnitude earthquake struck about 175 miles off the coast of Bandon on Sunday morning, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The quake, which hit just before 2 a.m., did not prompt any tsunami warnings. It hit less than 24 hours after a 4.3 magnitude quake in the same area on Saturday.

The quakes occurred along the Blanco Fracture Zone, a system of “strike-slip faults” off Cape Blanco in southern Oregon.

Earthquakes of magnitude 4.0-4.9 are considered “light.” Such quakes off the Oregon coast are common.

At least five, spanning in magnitude from 3.0 to 4.5, have occurred near that fracture zone since Nov. 29, according to this real time earthquake map from The Oregonian/OregonLive.
