Washington State football recruit Malijah Tucker continued to separate himself as one of the elite throwers in Class 2A, sweeping the shot put and discus to help the T-Birds accumulate 76 points to win a three-team league meet on Wednesday.
Tucker unleashed a toss of 57 feet, 2 inches to close the gap to under four feet behind Grandview’s Titus Jeffrey for the best throw in the classification. Tucker also claimed the discus and joined Logan Budd (110 and 300 hurdles) with multiple event wins.
Blake Kirkpatrick (100) and Jaxon Budd (200) claimed the sprints while Hayden Newman (3,200) plus Xavier Bunn (triple jump) also picked up wins for Tumwater. Centralia’s lone event winner came on a lifetime best throw in the javelin by Jack Muller of 144-03.
On the girls' side, Tumwater edged Centralia 53-41 for second behind Aberdeen. Tigers’ hurdler Irais Carrillo-Montenegro swept the 100 and 300-meter hurdles while Desiray Crockett crossed the line first in the 100, as did Anna Jones in the 200. Distance runner Elyse O’Dell ran a PR of 13:15.97.
Tumwater’s winning 400 relay was all freshmen in Brielle Clark, Lily Taggart, Lyah Hoops and Claire Winkelman. Paige Henderson (discus) and McKayla Clary (javelin) won in the field and Alexandra Broome (400) won on the track.
Rochester sweeps Evergreen dual against Hoquiam
Two relays each side along with eight athletes garnering multiple event victories, the Warriors ended up winning both boys and girls team races with 74 points (girls) and 66 points (boys) on Wednesday night at home.
Sprinter Kailyn Black kicked off and anchored Rochester’s 800 and 400-meter relays plus the senior also cruised in the two hurdle races. Kenna Pratt, Merecedies Dupont and Jordyn Johnson were also on the winning relays.
Pratt set a new PR to win the triple jump and Dupont set new bests in both the 100 and 200, winning the latter. Seraschel Aldrich (1,600 and 3,200) picked up the sweep while Ariel Maekawa Sanborn (discus) and Brooklyn Alfonso (javelin) shined in the field.
Le’Shawn Hines completed the jump trifecta by winning the high jump, triple jump for Rochester. Dominic Delgado – a victor in the open 100 – was a member of the Warriors’ triumphant 400 and 1,600-meter relays alongside Aiden Austin plus Luka Meckle.
Gunnar Morgan carved out a victory in the 1,600 and Bruce Phillips (discus) broke his previous mark to leave with a PR in discus.
