W.F. West played Riverside Golf Course like they’d been there before and claimed an Evergreen 2A Conference victory over Rochester in girls golf on Wednesday with a score of 41-19.

“They had a good day. We knew this would be our toughest opponent so far this season,” said Rochester coach Brian Keese.

Makenna Klovdahl of W.F. West was the match medalist with a round of 13. Aeryn Elder added ten points for the Bearcats, while Elizabeth Twining, Laney Barker, and Kat Torres all turned in scores of six points.

“The girls are right now where their inconsistency is keeping them down. They’re hitting good shots and they have an idea of the distances they want to hit but can’t always hit that distance accurately on their pitch shots,” W.F. West coach Bruce Thompson said. “Adjusting to the faster greens, that’s a big step for them.”

Thompson was impressed with the play of Klovdahl, beating her average score by four points.

It was Kyra Darnell who turned in a high score of nine points for the home team. Andrea Jones and Alex Anderson added three points each for Rochester. Kylie Miller and Esther Rose each notched two points in the loss.

Keese was pleased with the progress he saw out of his team in spite of the loss.

“She’s improved with each mach. We’re expecting her to be scoring regularly in the double digits soon,” Keese said of Darnell. “We’re still growing and learning.”

W.F. West hosts Aberdeen on Monday while Rochester travels to Tumwater Valley to take on the Thunderbirds on Tuesday.
