The Washington state Department of Fish and Wildlife Police helped rescue a man from the Cowlitz River Monday, Feb. 2, according to a news release from the agency.

WDFW police received the initial request to assist in the rescue from the Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office, who reported the man “was clinging to a tree in a log jam,” the agency said.

“Fish and Wildlife Officer Corey and Sergeant Anderson quickly responded,” the release stated.

Upon their arrival, Corey used an unmanned aircraft system (UAS) to reportedly find the man within a few minutes — in a different location from where first responders were first told to go.

Personnel from the Castle Rock Police Department and Cowlitz Fire Department homed in on the new location and rescued the man from the river.

Meanwhile, WDFW officers “continued surveillance with the UAS while the individual was rescued and brought safely to shore,” the agency stated.

The man was reportedly checked by first responders prior to his release.
