Washingtonians are paying $4.63 on average for a gallon of gas, about 33% more than the average American as prices surge more than a week into the U.S. and Israel’s war on Iran, according to AAA.
The price is the third-highest in the nation, behind California and Alaska.
Residents in King County are paying $4.878 a gallon, about 5% more than the average Washingtonian. King County has the third-highest average gas price in the state, according to AAA. Only Wahkiakum and Pacific counties had higher prices Monday.
Supplies from some of the world’s largest oil producers have been interrupted by shipping disruptions and damage to key Middle East oil and gas facilities. Nearly every country in the Middle East has sustained damage from missile or drone strikes during the war.
Ships carrying roughly 20 million barrels of oil a day have been unable to safely pass through the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf bordered on its north side by Iran.
Monday’s average in Washington state was about 26 cents higher than a week ago, 60 cents higher than a month ago and 53 cents higher than a year ago, according to AAA.
Your wallet may groan at the prices, but they’re not the highest we’ve ever seen. In June 2022, the average cost of a gallon of gas was $5.555 across the state and $5.693 in King County, according to AAA.
