The Rochester baseball team took two in a non-traditional way on Friday, topping Black Hills 13-0 and 10-6.
The first game, a league matchup, was a continuation of a postponed game from April 6. The Warriors were the designated road team, but since the game picked back up in the bottom half of the third, they took the field first like they would in a typical home game.
Rochester coach Brad Quarnstrom said that made it feel a little more normal, and he went with Mason Ubias on the bump, who started the game two weeks ago.
Ubias was dominant in a complete-game shutout, allowing just five hits and striking out 12.
“he picked up right where he left off,” Quarnstrom said. “He had great command of all of his pitches. He looked really sharp.”
Rochester (7-7, 3-5 2A EvCo) did more than enough offensively for Ubias, as the Warriors plated a run in each of the final four innings, including two in the sixth and seven in the seventh.
The offense continued to hit in Game 2, a non-league contest, scoring two in the first and three in the second to respond to four early runs from Black Hills (3-10, 2-8 2A EvCo).
Five more across the fourth and fifth was enough for Tayden Martin and Ben Johnson, who combined to allow just two runs in five and two-thirds out of the pen.
Hayden Pietras went 8 for 9 across the two games with eight runs batted in, while Tate Quarnstrom drove in a pair in Game 1 and Ubias and Kole Smith each drove in a run in Game 2.
Chase Chandler and Blake Klinger each collected two hits in the nightcap for Black Hills, and they both drove in a run. Truman Wimsett drove in two in the Game 2.
Black Hills will head to Cheney Stadium for a non-league contest against North Kitsap on Saturday.
Up next for the Warriors is a potential pigtail-deciding series against Centralia, which begins on Tuesday at Rochester.
“Today, I left like we had some good at-bats and good approaches,” Quarnstrom said. “Hopefully that confidence rolls into next week.”
