Another game script of a shooting night struggle followed by a fourth quarter rally played out again for the Rochester High School boys basketball team. The result was eerily similar in a 58-52 setback to Montesano on Tuesday night in an Evergreen league matchup.
Coupled with Hoquiam’s upset win over Tenino, the Warriors' chances to secure a Class 1A District 4 bid became a steeper climb. They would need to win out, including beating Hoquiam in the regular season finale, to have a shot at a tiebreaker.
“Just couldn’t close the deal,” Rochester head coach Caleb Sells said. “They keep fighting, they keep trying. We got six seniors and they don’t want to go out looking bad. I don’t see a lull.”
After just 10 combined points in the first quarter, the Warriors (1-17, 0-6 Evergreen) kept pace with the Bulldogs throughout and at one point, got to within a couple possessions in the fourth period. They couldn’t bury the key buckets to make the margin in their favor.
Just four Rochester players scored on the night, led by Kole Smith with 19 points while Brayden O’Connor added 15 and Colton Weiss registered 11. The Warriors will host rival Tenino on Thursday for their senior night.
