Two injured in crash after vehicle runs out of gas, driver falls asleep on I-5 in Chehalis

Two women were injured in a crash on Interstate 5 in Chehalis early Sunday morning that occurred after one vehicle ran out of gas and the driver of a second vehicle fell asleep, according to the Washington State Patrol. 

Julie C. Nelson, 63, of Centralia, was traveling south near milepost 80 at about 2:20 a.m. when her 2014 Honda Civic ran out of gas, according to the state patrol. As she turned on her emergency flashers and attempted to coast to the right shoulder, her vehicle was struck from behind by a 2009 Toyota Prius driven by Anita E. Huynh, 43, of Olympia. 

According to the state patrol, Huynh had fallen asleep at the wheel. 

Both Nelson and Huynh were transported to Providence Centralia Hospital with unspecified injuries.



Both women were wearing seat belts. Both vehicles were totaled. 

Drugs or alcohol were not a factor in the crash, according to the state patrol.
