PE ELL — Coming off of two losses to Wahkiakum and Columbia Adventist, Pe Ell coach Ross Hojem said that the Trojans were looking forward to getting back on the court Thursday against Three Rivers Christian.
“We wanted to come out and just get after it,” Hojem said.
The Trojans did just that, taking a big lead early and pulling away for a dominant 73-24 victory.
“I think our guys responded well and we’ve got some confidence,” Hojem said. “It’s what we needed.”
Liam McGrath led the way in the first half, scoring 14 points to help Pe Ell build a 32-5 lead by halftime, and Silas Edgar took over after halftime. Edgar scored 15 of his game-high 21 in the second half, including 11 in the final frame.
The Trojans were able to lock down the Three Rivers Christian offense outside of the third quarter, when they allowed 13 points. In the other three quarters, the Eagles scored just 11 points combined.
It was the perfect bounce back game for Pe Ell, which sits at 4-2 and in third place in the 1B CVL heading into the final four games of league play.
Columbia Adventist and Wahkiakum, the two teams that have beaten Pe Ell in league play, are currently the two teams ahead of the Trojans in the Columbia Valley League standings.
“I think this the toughest 1B league on this side of the state,” Hojem said. “There’s some good teams. We’re just trying to break into that.”
If Pe Ell can get into the top two by season's end, they would be able to host a first-round district tournament game.
Hojem noted that hosting a playoff game is a goal they are trying to reach, but he also said that the main goal is on “climbing the ladder.”
“You want to get that first step and keep it. Get the second one and keep that one,” Hojem said. “We just gotta tighten up our defensive consistency a little bit and we’ll be okay.”
The Trojans (7-7, 4-2 1B CVL) will host Winlock in a non-league game on Tuesday before returning to CVL play by hosting the Washington School for the Deaf next Thursday, Jan. 23.
