Controlling the offensive glass was one of the main factors in the Pe Ell High School girls basketball team winning their eighth consecutive game, the latest a 68-22 triumph over rival Oakville at home on Thursday night.
Since returning to face 1B competition, the Trojans (10-7, 6-0 CVL) have not lost and remain a game up on Wahkiakum in the league standings. They’ll meet the Mules in Cathlamet on Tuesday to determine the league title.
Maisy King continued her stellar freshman campaign with a 21-point, 11-rebound double-double to pace Pe Ell. It was up 27-2 after the first quarter and got the game into a running clock by the second half.
Madi Engel shot 100 percent from the field in her 13-point outing while Karli Phelps added 11 points. Those two combined for six assists and seven steals. The Trojans pulled down 31 offensive rebounds to Oakville’s six.
“It’s been nice the past several games seeing different girls step up as an offensive threat,” Pe Ell head coach Kelsey Lennox said. “Some games it’s been girls in the paint and others, it’s been from our guards.”
Of the Acorns (6-9, 3-4) 22 points, 21 came from Ui’lani Siufanua. She was the only player that attempted more than four field goals on the night. Oakville will return home on Friday to take on Wahkikaum while Pe Ell takes on Evergreen Lutheran in a non-league bout, also on Friday.
