Trojans clinch state tournament berth by beating Kodiaks

For the first time since 2012, the Pe Ell volleyball team is heading to the state tournament.

The Trojans earned a trip to state by beating Columbia Adventist in five sets on Friday in Oakville, bouncing back from a first set loss to take the next two.

After the Kodiaks took the fourth set, they had to forfeit the fifth due to a religious restriction.

As Seventh-day Adventists, the Kodiaks observe the Sabbath starting at sundown on Fridays, therefore they had to make it home before dark. The fifth set was set to begin just minutes before their predetermined cutoff time.

During the first four sets, Madi Engel led the way for the Trojans with 10 kills and 10 digs without missing a serve, and Ruby Magruder had 10 digs of her own.

Brookelynn King added 11 assists, eight aces, and four kills, and Karli Phelps had eight digs, five kills, and three assists. Sophia Milanowski had five aces, four kills, and four digs, and Ava King finished with three kills and a block. Bailey Cox also had a nice day at the service line, posting four aces along with three digs.

The Trojans (13-8) will learn their seed and first-round opponent in the 1B State Tournament on Sunday.
