TriMet surveillance video shows Gresham man launching dart into transit rider’s lung

TriMet surveillance footage captured the moment a 40-year-old Portland man, Joseph Naes, used a slingshot to fire a 6-inch-long dart at another man on a MAX platform on June 17, 2024, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in the case.

The dart struck 33-year-old Logan Sharp in the back, piercing his lung. Prosecutors said that Sharp could have died from the injury and that Naes was seen celebrating after the attack at the East 162nd Avenue station.

The attack was not random, as Naes recognized Sharp from an interaction at the same light rail platform the week before. Sharp had told Naes to stop hitting a woman on the head, which led to the retaliatory dart attack.

Naes pleaded guilty to second-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon, and also entered a no-contest plea for a fourth-degree assault charge related to the prior incident. On Aug. 25, a judge sentenced him to five years and 10 months in prison for his actions.
