Trains between Portland, Seattle canceled for 2 days after landslide

A landslide north of Portland has halted passenger train service between Seattle and Oregon until Sunday afternoon, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

The slide, which occurred between Kelso and Vancouver, Wash., blocked the railroad tracks and triggered a 48-hour moratorium for all passenger trains per BNSF Railway rules, said WSDOT spokesperson Janet Matkin. The moratorium ends around 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

Matkin said the landslide was in Felida, Clark County, the city where previous landslides have occurred, but in a different area. A landslide in early December and another in January also cut train service between Portland and Seattle for days. There are six daily round-trip Amtrak Cascades trains between Seattle and Portland.

The stoppage affects several West Coast Amtrak trains, including the Coast Starlight. Buses will transport passengers instead and stop at each station, Matkin said. Amtrak asks customers to call or text 800-USA-RAIL for assistance.
